Sweater weather: Why we love cardigans, wraps and shawls

There’s little we anticipate more than sweater weather. A chilly autumn breeze is perfect after the stuffy warmth of summer, but we’re not ready for winter’s cold right yet. Fall temperatures are the perfect middle point, and the season is perfect for layering and accessorizing to your heart’s content.

In fact, sweaters, shawls, cardigans and wraps – all staples of the season – are possibly some of the best clothing options around. They perfectly merge chic and comfy, allowing you to look completely put together without feeling like you changed out of your pajamas. You can easily spruce them up with women’s dress pants¬†or go for a cute-and-casual look with skinny jeans or leggings. Pair with eye-catching jewelry for a little flair, or accessorize with a scarf and beret for a classic French look.

Cardigans, sweaters and the like are so versatile that they look good with practically any style of shoe, too. Put on a pair of high heeled boots for chilly evenings or throw on ankle-strap pumps to bring your fall fashion to the workplace.

That said, we know you like to be on the cutting edge of fashion, and where else to look than Fashion Week? Here are three tips to incorporate straight from the runways:

1. Red

Elle noted some of the world’s most upscale brands, including Givenchy, Armani and Oscar de la Renta, featured outfits heavy on the power red, so of course you should incorporate this color into your look. Go bold with an all-red sweater or, if that’s a bit too much, accessories with a scarlet purse or ruby-toned jewelry.

2. Plaid

“Plaid was everywhere this season.”

As Harpers Bazaar pointed out, plaid was everywhere this season, gracing the collections of Calvin Klein, Michael Kors and Balenciaga. A print like this looks fantastic on its own, so stick to solid colors elsewhere. A single-color work dress would look great with a plaid scarf poncho, for example.

3. Glitter

Just because the days are getting shorter doesn’t mean you have to lose that sparkle in your step! J. Crew, Chanel and Saint Laurent all paraded glitter-covered booties down the runway recently, so take a page from their book and add some shimmer to your shoes. Lucky for you, any metallic accent will achieve a similar look, so feel free to add sparkle with gemstones or studs instead.

Above all, play up your fall fashion look however you see fit. As long as you have fun with it, you’ll look fabulous no matter what.
