It is a very exciting time in the fashion industry with the kickoff of New York Fashion Week (NYFW) which happens twice a year— in February when fashion designers show their Fall collection and then in September where they show their Spring collection along with seeing upcoming trends in the fashion industry. So here’s what you need to know about the New York Fashion Week.

New York has been one of the major fashion weeks held alongside other cities including Paris since 1943 due to World War II.  Although New York had fashion shows prior to then. In 1943, Eleanor Lambert, press director of the New York Dress Institute, organized the fashion shows into a single timeframe called “Press Week” since Fashion editors couldn’t go overseas to view the Fashion of the times.

New York Fashion Week Designers:

There are 160 designers that will have shows during the week.  On average there will be 30 to 40 different outfits that will be shown by each designer and each show last on average from 10 – 20 and very seldom will they start on time.

Translating the Fashions to mainstream:

Sometime when watching the fashion show you may wonder who wears these clothes. Although the actual show is more for the designers to show artistic expression the clothes or styles that are seen will be adapted and modified to make them ready for the mainstream market.   It’s always fun and interesting to see  how cutting edge fashion comes to be.  Each designer want to make the biggest impact that they can by translating the trend or theme of the collection for the next season. So that means the designers will show a more exaggerated and dramatic version of the outfit than what ends up in the stores. You might notice that a top that is completely see through on the runway, but ends up with a modest lining when it finally hits the stores next season.
