I always pack too much when I travel. How can I stop myself from doing this?

One absolute truth: if your bag is stuffed to the max, you won't be able to close it coming home, because somehow, someway…everything expands while travelling. Carry-on bags also ensure your luggage won't get lost and you wont' have to pay extra fees. Here's a couple of tips for keeping it easy (and small):

  1. When planning your outfits, plan to wear your heaviest items (sweaters and boots) on the plane.
  2. When packing, try putting everything you want in the bag. Then take it all out and re-evaluate…do you really need all that? Probably not!
  3. Think of your bag as being layered…with the heaviest, bulkiest items at the bottom. Fill the empty spots with smaller items like t-shirts and underwear, and put larger clothing items on top. It's a good idea to keep your quart-sized bag of liquids at the top, so you can take it out easily going through the security check.
  4. Remember that a few fashion essentials can go a long way towards making twice-worn outfits fresh.
  5. Don't fill your bag totally full. Remember, your stuff does expand…and chances are you're going to find those must-have purchases…they need room too!
